Merritt House Hotel

Historic Monterey Lodging Since 1830

Originally built in 1830, the Merritt House became the private residence of Josiah Merritt and Juana Castro in 1852. Josiah was a prominent figure who helped organize Monterey County, arriving in California during the 1849 Gold Rush and serving as the area's first county judge from 1851–1854. He married Juana Castro, the daughter of Monterey's alcalde (mayor), connecting the home to one of the region's most established local families.

National Register of Historic Places

In 1979, the residence was thoughtfully converted into the Merritt House Hotel. Today, it is honored with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its statewide significance. As a cherished local landmark, the hotel is also proudly featured each April in the Monterey History and Art Association's annual Adobe Tour.
